Colin Cass is a long standing member of the ATC NSW having followed in the footsteps of his father in the earlier working years of the Tile Merchants Association, later to be known as the NSW Tile Training Committee and today as we know it, the Australian Tile council of NSW.
Col’s Industry experience within the Australian Tiling Industry commenced as the son of a Tile Merchant/Retailer;
Then he became a qualified practising wall and floor tiler;
Followed by a Tile Retailer trading as Cass Tiles;
Progressing to become a TAFE Teacher of wall and floor tiling for 27 years including many years as Senior Head teacher;
Col brought to the ATC NSW a broad wealth of knowledge and experience;
Col also brought commitment and the intention to what he could do to further the best interest of the Australian Tiling Industry including that of the Australian Tile Council;
Col continues that commitment today still as member of the ATC NSW and contributes significantly with his expert knowledge as a highly recognised and respected Industry wall and floor tiling consultant.
Col was a Wall and Floor Tiling teacher at TAFE. For 27 years, initially at the Albion St Annexe, and later at Randwick TAFE Campus.
During that time, he also wrote the Wall and Floor Tiling Trade Course Syllabus in 1984, and re-writes 1991, 1996 & 2003,
Col designed and supervised the implementation of tile fixer training for the Malaysian Armed Forces Re-Training Scheme, a TAFE joint venture.
In 2002, he wrote the Tiling and Waterproofing curricula for TAFE NSW from the National Training Package.
The Australian Standard on Ceramic Tiling: Ceramic Tiles & Ceramic Tile Adhesives and Grouts & Natural and Re-constituted Stone Tile Installation.
The Standards Australia Committee on Waterproofing of wet areas within residential buildings and sub-committee, External Waterproofing.
An Australian delegate to the International Standards Organisation Technical Committee on ceramic tiles, adhesives, grouts and waterproofing.
A member of the Technical Committee - World Congress on Ceramic Tile Quality, which meets every two years in Castellon, Spain.
I first met Col when he was around the age of 11 years, in the early 60’s helping his dad out within the Family Tile Store at O’Riordan Street Alexandria.
Some 19 years later we met again at the TAFE tiling section at Albion Street Annexe Sydney. Col was a Tiling Teacher and I had only just been appointed as a tiling teacher.
From that time Col became a mate, mentor and an inspiration and remains that way today some 33 years later.
Having said that, within our journey I was in the unique position of teaching Col, for 12 months as a student, within a class of 14 other Students, I can at least say that I did teach Col a few things in our long friendship.
Col’s achievements have been exceptional in mentoring and advising others within the Australian Tiling Industry and he has undoubtedly contributed in ways that will ensure that future tiling students will have the opportunity to graduate as tilers via tilers training packages that are comprehensive and with integrity.
Similarly the Australian Tile Council and the Tile Industry also have benefited significantly from Col’s continued long time support and commitment. I am most pleased to have played a part in putting forward a long overdue recognition of Col’s contribution to the ATC NSW and the wider Australian tiling industry.
On behalf of the ATC NSW, I thank Col for his long term association & dedication to the ATC NSW and on his elevation to Life Membership of the Australian Tile Council NSW Division.
